Media Literacy
Media literacy is the set of knowledge, skills and practices that enable individuals to actively and responsibly engage with media in three interconnected ways: production, consumption, and participation.
As producers, media-literate people learn to create clear, ethical and creative content. They develop digital tools, storytelling techniques and communication strategies, considering clarity, representation and social responsibility.
As consumers, they become able to access and analyse the variety of everyday messages – from news and ads to films and social media posts. This involves questioning sources, identifying biases, understanding representations and reflecting on how media shapes beliefs, behaviours and worldviews.
As participants, they contribute meaningfully to public dialogue, collaborate with others and use media to take part in civic, cultural and social life. Participation emphasises respect, empathy and responsibility in online and offline environments.
Together, the three dimensions – production, consumption and participation – make media literacy essential for active citizenship, personal empowerment and lifelong learning in the 21st century.
